Work-life balance when your bedroom is your office

In this time of covid, many of us have learned about working from home during lockdown. Zim’s solutions, being a homegrown family business, has its world headquarters in our basement. The basement is also where my bedroom is and where I spend my free time gaming. This setup makes it harder for me to separate work and home. As the summer has gone on we’ve implemented a few measures to help keep the two separate.

We try to clearly separate the weekend and the week by starting off with a starting point meeting every week. This quick short meeting is done one-on-one and is a great way to plan out the goals of the week while also serving as a point where we transition into the work week. We also have an equivalent on the flip side where on Friday we meet to discuss what we did during the week. After the meeting, our only obligation is to write a “golden ticket” where we write about one thing we liked, one thing we didn’t, and one area to improve. Both of these things serve to end the week and help transition to the weekend.
With the family business, there’s also a house rule that there is no work talk at the dinner table. While we occasionally falter, the rule helps us to relax after a day of work and begin to enjoy the night.

All these things have helped us to improve the work-life balance for our business and our family. We hope to continue improving these things to help keep those somewhat separate.

Air conditioners serve the very important purpose of keeping your home cool during the summer. Maintaining a relatively constant temperature and humidity in your home through the change of seasons is not just important to stay comfortable but also to protect your home.
